    Broadway’s ‘Ragtime’ Sells Out First Previews

    Ragtime, Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of the Stephen Flaherty-Lynn Ahrens-Terrence McNally musical, began previews last week and filled every seat at the Vivian Beaumont Theater for the three performances. Directed by LCT’s artistic director Lear deBessonet, the production at the non-prof grossed $451,554 for the three previews; opening night is October 16.

    While overall Broadway business was down a bit – last week included the two-day Rosh Hashanah holiday – the hits stayed strong. Waiting For Godot, starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, had a fine opening week, selling out the Hudson and grossing $1,618,800, while Hamilton, riding very high with the limited run return of original cast member Leslie Odom, Jr., took in $3,773,354, easily topping the roster.

    After Hamilton, the top earners were Wicked ($2,003,339); Art ($1,648,063); Mamma Mia! ($1,645,712); and Godot. Sell-outs for the week ending September 28 were Art, Hamilton, Just in Time, Mamma Mia!, Oh, Mary!, Ragtime, Waiting for Godot and Wicked.

    Punch, James Graham’s play that opened to mixed reviews last night, was at 87% of capacity last week at the non-prof Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel Friedman, grossing $274,116.

    Exiting the roster was Jeff Ross: Take A Banana For The Ride, the comedian’s one-man show that never quite found its audience. In its final week at the Nederlander, attendance was at about 50% of capacity, with a gross of $267,034.

    Some other notable numbers:

    • Chicago attendance was at about 56% of capacity at the Ambassador, for a gross of $502,018;
    • Buena Vista Social Club still going strong at the Schoenfeld – 98% capacity, $1,055,187 gross;
    • Maybe Happy Ending took in $1,169,909, 97%;

    In all, the 28 Broadway shows grossed $30,783,164, a dip of about 4% from the previous week but up 22% from last season at this time. Attendance was 233,580, down 6% from the previous week but up 3% year to year.

    Season to date, Broadway, in the 18th week of the 2025-26 season, has grossed $609,572,885, up about 9% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 4,780,836 up 6%.
