Stephen Colbert Talks Presidential Run Amid Cancelled Show

Back in July, it was announced that Stephen Colbert’s late show would be coming to an end next year. Since then, fans have been wondering what could be next for him. In fact, he even discussed one possible career path during a recent appearance.

Colbert is known for hosting various television shows. Many were introduced to him through the news satire show, The Colbert Report, which ran from 2005 to 2014.

In 2015, Colbert became the host of CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, back in July, it was announced that the show would be coming to an end, with CBS planning to retire the Late Show format altogether.

At this time, it’s believed the show will come to an end by May 2026. As shared by People, Colbert recently talked about his plans for the future once his time with the show has ended.

Colbert recently appeared at Slate’s Political Gabfest event on December 18. The event was hosted in Washington, D.C., with Colbert involved in a live show in New York City. During the event, one question Colbert was frequently asked by listeners was if he would be interested in switching from television to politics.

However, Colbert didn’t agree with the idea, noting, “Absolutely, I should not run for president.” He acknowledged, “I understand why you’d want me to.”

That said, Colbert still had a sense of humor about the situation. He even offered a stereotypical politician’s response: “I’d have to discuss with my faith leader and my family to see if, once my service on the Late Show ends in May, if I could be of some greater service to this nation that I love so much.”

As previously reported, Colbert already made headlines at the event after hugging John Dickerson, who was leaving CBS Evening News. After the touching moment, he also lifted up his middle finger, which was believed to be directed towards CBS.

Back in October, Colbert also jokingly celebrated National Boss’ Day by honoring Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, in reference to Skydance Media’s merger with Paramount. At the time, he shared, “Mr. Ellison, I love you.” Poking fun at his late show’s cancellation, he added, “That ought to buy us a couple more months.”
