Argylle’s Matthew Vaughn on Using The Beatles “Now and Then”

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the new film, which boasts an incredible ensemble cast of Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and more. Listen to the new episode above, and don’t forget to like, review, and subscribe to KMW wherever you get your podcasts.

In addition to on-set stories, Vaughn tells the tale of how he cleared the rights to use The Beatles’ “final” song “Now and Then” a year before it was even publicly known to exist. It just so happened that the song’s producer, Giles Martin (son of the great Beatles collaborator George Martin), was also serving as music producer on Argylle:

“Over a year and a half ago, I was with him and I said, ‘I’m really struggling to find what I call the romantic song of the movie, ’cause I need it to be sad, but hopeful…,’” Vaughn recalls. “And he said, ‘Do you want to hear a new Beatles song?’ And Giles has got a hell of a sense of humor, so I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. Whatever.’ And he goes, ‘No, I’m being deadly serious.’ He played it to me, and it was as if Lennon had seen the film… We just slapped it on the movie, and we didn’t have to edit anything — it just fitted the picture.”

Argylle tells the story of Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted spy novelist who is drawn into the real world of espionage. Notably, this is Vaughn’s first directing effort for a script he did not write. The director touches on that experience, as well as the incredible cast of actors he got to work with.
