Brad Arnold, the lead singer of the hard-rock band 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday. He was 47 years old.
In May 2025, Arnold explained in a video he had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer (clear cell renal cell carcinoma) which had spread to one of his lungs. The band canceled their 2025 tour supporting Creed.
3 Doors Down released the following statement announcing Arnold’s passing:
“With heavy hearts, we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer, and songwriter of 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday, February 7th, at the age of 47.
With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer.
As a founding member, vocalist, and original drummer of 3 Doors Down, Brad helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners. Brad’s songwriting became a cultural touchstone for a generation, producing some of the most enduring hits of the 2000s, including the band’s breakout hit, ‘Kryptonite,’ which he wrote in his math class when he was just 15 years old. His music reverberated far beyond the stage, creating moments of connection, joy, faith, and shared experiences that will live on long after the stages he performed on.
Above all, he was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time and kindly asks that their privacy be respected.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”

Arnold grew up in Escatawpa, Mississippi where he met his bandmates in Matt Roberts (lead guitarist) and Todd Harrell (bass guitarist). He founded 3 Doors Down in 1996 where he served as lead singer and drummer, before relinquishing the drum seat to Richard Liles filled in as drummer in 2000 (the role was later held by Daniel Adair and finally Greg Upchurch).
3 Doors Down released their debut record, The Better Life in 2000 and it was an instant hit. The Better Life features “Kryptonite,” the band’s most well-known track, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Best Rock Song at the 43rd Grammy Awards. Arnold said that he wrote the song when he was 15 in his high school math class.
“That’s like the third or fourth song I ever wrote, like, period. That skippy little drumbeat was just me beating on my desk,” he said. “I wrote probably about half of that Better Life album in that math class.”
The Better Life’s second single was “Loser,” which Arnold wrote about a friend who struggled with addiction at the time. Despite “Kryptonite” etching its place as 3 Doors Down’s most popular song, “Loser” sat in the top spot of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 21 weeks. “Having a song as big as ‘Kryptonite,’ that can be the kiss of death,” Arnold explained to LoudWire in 2020. “Because a song like that can make your career, but can also make it impossible for you to ever live up to it again.”
Subsequent singles “Duck and Run” and “Be Like That” continued to increase the band’s popularity, with the latter track eventually being re-recorded (with minor lyrical tweaks) for the American Pie 2 soundtrack.
The band’s second album Away From the Sun, was released in 2002 and earned two Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, both for that album’s lead single “When I’m Gone.”
With continued success, the band founded The Better Life Foundation in 2004 to aid children in need of food, shelter, and medical help by raising funds and redistributing them to local charities and faith-based groups. The following year, the foundation raised money for Hurricane Katrina relief, buying and sending out rescue supplies, fire trucks, and police cars to Southern Mississippians affected by the storm.
From 2010 to 2023, the Better Life Foundation hosted a weekend-long festival to raise money, and past guests included Lynyrd Skynyrd, Daughtry, and Shinedown. According to their website, they have raised over $3 million for charities, including Habitat for Humanity and Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast.
3 Doors Down released several more albums after their big break; 2005’s Seventeen Days; 2008’s 3 Doors Down; and 2011’s Time of My Life. Their most recent record, Us and the Night, was released in 2016.
