Andrew Rasmussen’s portrait of New Jersey native Micky Angelo Petrillo takes top honors in a fiercely competitive field at NYTFF’s 2026 Trans Celebration Weekend
Call Me Micky, directed by Andrew Rasmussen and executive produced by Dominique Jackson, has been named Best Documentary at the New York Transgender Film Festival (NYTFF), presented as part of the Trans Celebration Weekend at Cherry Grove Theater on Fire Island.

The 22-minute documentary follows New Jersey native Micky Angelo Petrillo as he barrels into his next act after transitioning at 59, with humor, candor, and no intention of doing it quietly. The film was recognized during NYTFF’s creators panel and awards presentation, held as part of a weekend of screenings and events dedicated entirely to trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, intersex, and two-spirit stories and storytellers.

The Best Documentary win came out of a slate that organizers and audiences alike called one of the strongest in the festival’s history. Call Me Micky was up against a field that included Merlyn’s Beard, Not Exactly Strangers, Affirmation, Let It Out, Baker’s Boy, and Fire Island Dreamscapes, among other selections — every one of them a distinctive, fully realized piece of trans storytelling. Competition for the award was stiff, and the win reflects the strength of a shortlist in which every film had a real case for the top prize.

Call Me Micky continues to screen on the festival circuit following its NYTFF win. Additional screening dates and details will be announced.
