The crime thriller Caught Stealing, which stars Austin Butler, Regina King, and Zoë Kravitz, features an after-credits scene that includes a cameo appearance by a major Hollywood actor. The movie is the latest entry in the filmography of Darren Aronofsky, who also helmed Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Wrestler (2008), and The Whale (2022).

Actress Laura Dern features in a scene that appears in Caught Stealing after the credits have started rolling. Dern portrays the mother of Butler’s Hank Thompson in the movie.
Throughout the main runtime of Caught Stealing, the audience members only hear the voice of Hank’s mother. Hank speaks to her over the phone from New York City while she is in California. Their conversation often revolves around their shared love for the San Francisco Giants. Hank used to be a promising baseball prospect, but his career came to a sudden halt due to an injury he sustained in a car accident.
As mentioned above, an after-credits scene reveals Laura Dern as Hank’s mother. At first, this scene seemed to be filmed in a way that would not unveil who is playing Hank’s mother as Caught Stealing ends. However, the movie eventually does disclose that a major Hollywood star like Dern was Hank’s mother all along. She opens a package delivered to her home and discovers the money her son sent for her.
Earlier in the movie, Hank faces off against King’s Detective Roman, a corrupt police officer, and Russian and Jewish mobsters for $4 million he finds in a storage unit belonging to his neighbor, Russ, portrayed by Matt Smith. In the end, Hank leaves New York City with Russ’ cat, Bud, and half of the money for Tulum, Mexico. He sends the other half to his mother.
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Butler reflected on his relationship with Dern and revealed that the Lonely Planet actress looks like his mother, who passed away in 2014.
