Chris Hemsworth Channels Steve Irwin in Old Home Video For His Father

A newly resurfaced home video reveals a hilarious and sweet side to Chris Hemsworth, featuring his pitch-perfect impersonation of the late, great Steve Irwin. However, it is part of a much deeper and more personal mission for the Hemsworth family.

Chris Hemsworth impersonates Steve Irwin in old video

To celebrate the release of his new Disney+ and Hulu documentary, Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, the actor shared a grainy home video from his past. The clip features a teenage Chris Hemsworth fully embodying his hero, Steve Irwin. Dressed in the Crocodile Hunter’s signature khaki shirt and shorts, a young Hemsworth enthusiastically launches into his routine.

“How you going folks?” he says, slipping into his best Irwin accent. “We’ve got a real bloody ripper in store for you today. It’s gonna be bloody unreal!” The aspiring actor then announces he is tracking a “Siberian Tiger Australian Fox,” which the clip humorously reveals is just the family dog. “Next week, we’ll be chasing the Australian grasshopper! Can’t wait!” he adds with Irwin’s trademark excitement. On his Instagram, Hemsworth captioned the clip, “My first self-appointed, unofficial acting gig. I drew inspiration from one of my heroes, the crocodile hunter himself.”

While the moment offers plenty of nostalgia, it carries a deeper connection to the documentary that inspired its resurfacing. A Road Trip to Remember follows Hemsworth and his 71-year-old father as they revisit meaningful places across Australia. The journey was sparked by Craig’s recent diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer’s — a condition that gradually affects memory, thinking, and behavior. The film also reveals that Hemsworth carries two copies of the APOE4 gene, which increases his own risk of developing the illness.

Much of the film explores reminiscence therapy, a practice that uses photos, objects, and stories from the past to stimulate memory in people living with dementia. Throughout the journey, Hemsworth creates powerful multisensory moments for his father, from visiting his childhood home to reconnecting with old friends.
