Christopher Nolan Is ‘Terrified’ To Make This ‘Incredibly Difficult’ Movie

Christopher Nolan Is ‘Terrified’ To Make This ‘Incredibly Difficult’ Movie

Christopher Nolan just admitted the one type of movie that genuinely scares him, and it’s not what fans would expect. The acclaimed director revealed why he finds a particular genre “incredibly difficult” and would be “terrified” to attempt it despite his love for watching those films.

Why Christopher Nolan finds romantic comedies ‘incredibly difficult’

Christopher Nolan recently sat down with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to promote his latest epic, The Odyssey. During the conversation, the acclaimed director opened up about why he stays away from lighter genres like romantic comedies. Nolan admitted that making audiences laugh genuinely intimidates him as a filmmaker.

The two-time Oscar winner expressed deep respect for directors who specialize in comedic storytelling. “I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult. I love watching those movies,” Nolan shared. He went on to praise comedy professionals for taking on what he considers an enormous creative risk.

Furthermore, Nolan contrasted his own experience with dramatic films against the unique challenges of comedy. “If I show a film to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, ‘Ah, they don’t get it,’” he explained. However, he stressed that comedy strips away that protective layer entirely. “There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy,” the director added candidly.

Meanwhile, his latest film, The Odyssey, adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic for the big screen with groundbreaking technology. The production spanned 91 days across six countries and became the first feature shot entirely on IMAX cameras. IMAX engineers built a custom silencing system so Nolan could capture dialogue scenes with the notoriously loud equipment. Additionally, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema devised a mirror rig allowing actors to maintain natural eye contact around the oversized cameras.

The Odyssey has already surpassed $600 million at the worldwide box office in its theatrical run. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. The ensemble also features Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, and Bill Irwin among others.
