The Golden Globe nominations were released this morning and surprisingly, there are a few notable horror titles on the list. Perhaps not as surprising is the amount of nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance starring Demi Moore. Overall it garnered five nods including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, and Best Actor. Unfortunately, Dennis Quaid was snubbed.
The Substance had a slow burn in 2024. It premiered at Cannes to a standing ovation, and from there its word of mouth spread like wildfire. Universal Pictures originally wanted the distribution rights but got cold feet due to its subject matter. The streaming service Mubi got worldwide distribution rights and opened the movie theatrically in September. Subsequently streaming it on their platform beginning Halloween 2024.
Other Golden Globe nominations include Alien: Romulus, Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Grant’s nod is placed in the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy category, making it an odd placement since the film is neither of those things.
It will be interesting to see whether or not The Substance will win its respective categories because horror movies have rarely been the favorite to do so. The Golden Globes are also a hint at what might be the nomination roster for the Academy Awards. Could Demi Moore also be an Oscar nominee this year?
The Golden Globes will air on Sunday, Jan. 5.
