Frailty Found a Frightening Foothold in Religious Horror [The Rabid Dog’s House]

The Rabid Dog’s House is a recurring feature at Wicked Horror where contributor Justin Steele uncovers hidden gems, lost classics, and overlooked indie offerings with a little bite. Flying solo or with his co-host Zena Dixon, he will discuss an array of topics covering film, literature, and television. Check out the latest installment below. In this episode we’re looking back at 2001’s Frailty!

2001’s Frailty is directed by Bill Paxton and stars Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Matt O’Leary, Jeremy Sumpter, and Powers Boothe. In the present, an FBI agent (Boothe) is approached by Fenton (McConaughey), a man who wants to lead the agent to a serial killer while telling the story of growing up with his brother. In the past, Fenton (O’Leary) and Adam (Sumpter) lived with their widowed father (Paxton). The boys’ lives are forever changed when their father begins to believe he has been visited by an angel of God instructing the family to hunt down and kill demons disguised as human beings. Adam is an eager believer while Fenton is horrified by the actions of his father.

Frailty is for the horror fan that enjoys unexpected twists with a religious backdrop. Bill Paxton maintains an unsettling tone as his direction unravels an intimate setting into an examination of family terror. Anchored by an introspective performance by Matthew McConaughey, Frailty is a must-see classic amongst 2000’s religious horror.
