How to Train Your Dragon whips up another weekend as widest release

It was another fun weekend for moviegoers as How to Train Your Dragon made its theatrical debut, to the tune of an impressive $84.63 million from a starting location count of 4,356 theaters. The film’s second weekend, however, will provide a significantly bigger test as three newcomers are set to challenge the current champ at the domestic box office. How to Train Your Dragon boosts its theater count to 4,373 this weekend, adding 17 venues from its opening run.

Making its debut this weekend is the latest from Walt Disney with the release of Elio. Starting in 3,750 movie houses, the movie follows a boy named Elio who finds himself transported across the galaxy and is mistaken for the intergalactic ambassador of our planet Earth. The film is directed by Adrian Molina, Domee Shi, and Madeline Sharafian and includes a voice cast of Zoe Saldaña, Brad Garrett, and Yonas Kibreab as the title character.

Also making its cinematic debut is the Danny Boyle directed horror feature, 28 Years Later. The film is the third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, which began in 2002 with
28 Days Later, then followed up with 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, combining for a global franchise total of $147 million. The latest film will be available in 3,444 theaters across North America.

Entering theaters for the first time is Bride Hard. The film stars Rebel Wilson as a secret agent masquerading as the maid of honor at her childhood best friend’s luxurious destination wedding, but things go sideways when a ruthless team of mercenaries crashes the celebration, taking the guests hostage and aiming for a high-value target. Co-starring with Wilson is an experienced cast including Anna Camp, Anna Chlumsky, DaVine Joy Randolph, and Gigi Zumbado. We will update the theater count once it becomes available.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the $370+ million domestic earner, Lilo & Stitch, still widely available in 3,375 locations and lastly, Materialists, holding on to its opening count of 2,844 theaters.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of three more new wide releases, which include the Formula One racing feature, F1: The Movie starring Brad Pitt. That feature is projected to start out in approximately 3,700 theaters, including IMAX locations. Also making its way into theaters is the sequel to 2023’s M3GAN, with the release of M3GAN 2.0.
