Huey Morgan joins Virgin Radio after exit from 6 Music

Huey Morgan has joined Virgin Radio, just weeks after announcing his departure from BBC Radio 6 Music.

The former Fun Lovin’ Criminals frontman presented his final show on 6 Music on December 27, after a 17-year stint on the network, with the BBC wishing him “the very best for the future” as they announced he was leaving the corporation.

Now (January 4), Virgin Radio UK have confirmed that Morgan has joined their network and next Saturday (January 10), he will host the first of his new weekend mornings shows on the station.

The Huey Show will broadcast live from 10am to 2pm every Saturday and Sunday, with Morgan joining a presenting line-up that also includes Chris Evans, Blur’s Alex James and Scissor Sisters’ Ana Matronic.

“I’m so excited to be part of Virgin Radio at this very important moment in its history and will endeavour to bring all the best music to the listeners every weekend,” Morgan said in a statement.

New York-born musician Morgan rose to fame as the frontman of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, who found particular success in the UK with three top 10 albums and eight top 40 singles, including ‘Scooby Snacks’ and ‘Loco’.

Morgan stepped down from the group in late 2021. In a statement at the time, the remaining members wished him “all the best with his endeavours” and said they would “continue as Fun Lovin’ Criminals”.

However, in 2023, he would criticise the current line-up on social media, describing them as “frauds and cowards” as well as being a “tribute act”.

During his radio career, Morgan caused controversy in 2012 by criticising fellow 6 Radio DJ Lauren Laverne, calling himself “the people’s champ” and saying Laverne “just shows up and plays on Twitter”. He would later apologise to the presenter for his comments.

This year, he published his autobiography, The Fun Lovin’ Criminal, which charted the rise of the band, Morgan’s struggles with mental health, and stories from ‘90s New York. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, praising his honesty and authentic voice.
