IAN SWEET’s SUCKER Track by Track Breakdown

Consequence’s Track by Track is a feature series that has artists take readers through every song on their newest release. Today, IAN SWEET takes us through her latest record, SUCKER.

New York-based artist Jilian Medford, performing under the name IAN SWEET, has released her brand new album SUCKER today (Friday, November 3rd) via Polyvinyl. The follow-up to her surprise EP from last year, STAR STUFF, the new set of songs is full of stand-out moments of staggering dark synths, upbeat chords, and sheer creativity.

Off the back of a string of acclaimed tracks, including the relatable and dramatic “Smoking Again,” SUCKER finds Medford supplementing her pop sensibilities with an indie rock edge. Diving into themes such as love and lust on the title track and the nostalgia of younger days on the track “Comeback,” she takes listeners through many chapters of her whole life in this electrifying new album.

“This song makes me think of my mom, and how she took care of me and sacrificed so much for me in a deep crisis,” she tells Consequence of the track “Comeback.” “Watching me go through such darkness and pain — how she took care of me and checked me into an outpatient therapy program after I told her I was suicidal.”

Despite releasing great music constantly over the last few years, SUCKER shows that Medford is only just getting started. Listen to IAN SWEET’s SUCKER below, followed by Medford’s track-by-track breakdown of the record.
