Inside Princess Diana’s Last Birthday Celebration in 1997

Princess Diana spent her final birthday in the public eye. The day remains one of the most memorable moments of her final summer. On July 1, 1997, the Princess of Wales celebrated her 36th birthday at London’s Tate Gallery Centenary Gala. Less than two months later, she died in a car crash in Paris. Her final birthday remains a defining chapter in royal history.

Looking back at Princess Diana’s final months in 1997

Princess Diana marked her 36th birthday by attending the Tate Gallery’s 100th anniversary celebrations in London. The Royal Family’s official website confirms that she spent her last birthday at the Tate event, less than two months before her death in Paris on August 31, 1997. For the evening, Diana wore a black Chantilly lace gown that designer Jacques Azagury gave her as a birthday gift. She completed the look with an emerald-and-diamond choker, matching drop earrings, bracelets, and a black clutch.

The evening also showed Diana’s familiar connection with the public. PEOPLE reported that she stopped to greet well-wishers outside the venue. Fans handed her flowers, birthday cards, gifts, and a pink balloon with a cartoon bear before she entered the gala. That warmth later echoed in Earl Spencer’s tribute, where he remembered Diana as someone who “needed no royal title” to create her own kind of magic.

Her birthday came during a busy period of humanitarian work. In June 1997, Diana had supported the auction of her dresses for charity. That summer, she also continued humanitarian work connected to the Red Cross and the campaign against land mines. The Royal Family website notes that Diana’s final official engagement in Britain came later that month, on July 21, when she visited Northwick Park Hospital in London.

Looking back, the night at the Tate feels both glamorous and painful. Diana appeared poised for a new beginning, but history gave the evening a heartbreaking meaning.
