EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate is taking advantage of Mother’s Day weekend beginning May 9 and dating the Joe Carnahan-directed Shadow Force. The movie was previously dated for May 2.
Co-written by Leon Chills and Carnahan, in Shadow Force, Kyrah (Washington) and Issac (Sy) were once the leaders of a multinational special forces group called Shadow Force. They broke the rules by falling in love, and in order to protect their son, they go underground. With a large bounty on their heads, and the vengeful Shadow Force hot on their trail, one family’s fight becomes all-out war.

Shadow Force becomes the only major studio release on that weekend alongside independent wide entries Juliet & Romeo from Briarcliff Entertainment, A Clown in a Cornfield from IFC, and the James Madigan-directed action pic Fight or Flight with Josh Hartnett and Katee Sackhoff from Vertical. Remember, this is the weekend after Disney and Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, which is kicking off summer.
Typically, female-skewing movies see a bounce on Mother’s Day Sunday during matinees, the draw here being former Scandal alum Washington.
Mark Strong, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Cliff “Method Man” Smith also star in Shadow Force.
Producers are Washington Pilar Savone, Stephen “Dr.” Love and Sterling K. Brown. Lionsgate produced the movie in association with Media Capital Technologies, as well as Made with Love, Simpson Street and Indian Meadows production.
