Mahershala Ali Didn’t Like Magic in MCU Movie Pitch

X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo recently took to social media to share what his original pitch for a Blade MCU movie was, and why it was rejected.

What did Beau DeMayo say about his Blade MCU movie pitch?

In a lengthy post on X, describing what it was like to pitch projects at Marvel Studios. DeMayo criticized the style in which Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and co-president Lou D’Esposito went about breaking down drafts of projects, and specifically brought up a pitch that he once made for a Blade movie as an example.

According to DeMayo, one of his Blade movie pitches involved the heavy use of magic. In it, Deacon Frost would trick a group of explorers into revealing a vampire spell, and tied the movie in with the world of Doctor Strange by incorporating the Chthon, which is briefly seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

To those asking why I’m not so hard on #Superman, the answer is I’ve never worked with Gunn or DC.
Like Matt Shankman and the writers of #fantasticfour, I’ve sat in the “creative meetings” at @MarvelStudios. They’re horrible.

While Feige liked the idea, DeMayo said, the pitch was criticized for being “too comic book,” with DeMayo also noting that Blade star Mahershala Ali “bumped” on the film featuring magic so tonally.

Recently, Marvel was said to have “cracked” an idea for the Blade movie. Ali himself is still attached to the role, but has been more or less dismissive of giving any updates when asked. Throughout its development, directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were previously attached to the movie, along with writers Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Starrbury, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson.

It’s unclear who is attached to the project now in a writing and directing capacity, or if any of the film’s originally reported cast (including Mia Goth) remain involved in the project.
