Daytona Beach woman Nichole Maks made headlines last summer following an unusual series of events that transpired following the death of her roommate, 79-year-old Michael Cerasoli. And believe it or not, the Mountain Dew bath referenced in the headline may not be the strangest detail of this highly unorthodox case.

An affidavit recovered by local news station WESH reveals that an officer was flagged down to assist with a fire at the Daytona Beach home Maks and Cerasoli shared. Upon inspection, first responders found Cerasoli deceased inside the dwelling, with blunt force trauma to his head and several stab wounds to his torso.

The next day, police located Maks in the neighboring city of Holly Hill. When law enforcement personnel caught up with her, Maks had blood on her leg and a hammer and a knife in her possession. Maks dropped both the knife and hammer after she was approached by the officers.

From there, Maks was taken into custody for questioning. Upon arrival at the station, she told several different stories to detectives. She initially denied knowing Cerasoli and even suggested that she had been homeless for the past several years.

After finally admitting to knowing (and living with) Cerasoli, Maks said that the victim lived on the second level of the home they shared, and she suggested she only went to the upper level to “feed her spiders”.

When officers prepared to take a DNA sample, Maks requested a drink. She was given a Diet Mountain Dew, which she held off on drinking but eventually poured all over her hair and body, presumably in the hopes of removing DNA from her person.

Despite her efforts to cover her tracks, Maks’ DNA was found on the handle of a knife recovered from the crime scene, and Cerasoli’s DNA was found on the blade. Maks has been charged with murder and remains in custody.
