Avatar: Fire and Ash continued its box office glory over the holidays, earning $63m in its second weekend at the domestic box office. The film has totaled an estimated $250.3M domestically and $860 million worldwide, and is set to remain on top of the box office this upcoming weekend with no newcomers in its way.
Expanding from just two theaters last week to 590 this week is the psychological thriller The Plague, from IFC Entertainment Group. The film follows a socially anxious 12-year-old boy who endures the ruthless hierarchy at a water polo camp, with his anxiety spiraling into psychological turmoil over the summer. The Plague earned $22,881 from those two theaters in its opening weekend.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the Bradley Cooper-directed comedy-drama, Is This Thing On?, expands from 33 to 1,200 locations.
Note: Due to the holidays, not all studios have reported theater counts for their films in release. Listed are the counts reported by their respective studios, and we’ll update them as we receive additional reports.
