New York post-hardcore act Orange 9mm have returned with their first new song in 26 years, “Turn It Up.”
The frenetic track is a groovy basher with jittery funk riffs and a joyous performance from frontman Chaka Malik, who encourages the listener to increase the volume: “Turn it up! Turn it up!” He’s got a point, as drummer Chris Enriquez’s cacophonous cymbal-work really shines when the tune is blaring.
The song marks the first material by Orange 9mm since 1999 and features the band’s current live lineup of Malik, Enriquez, guitarist Taylor McLam, and bassist Cory Bonfiglio. The reunited outfit recently played a gig supporting Refused’s farewell tour stop in New York and is slated to play a tribute show for late NYC promoter Rich Hall on Friday (June 13th) at Warsaw in Brooklyn.
Orange 9mm was formed in 1992 by Malik (Burn, Ghost Decibels) and guitarist Chris Traynor (currently a member of Bush). The band would release their self-titled debut EP in 1994 before dropping their first full-length, Driver Not Included, via Atlantic subsidiary EastWest America in 1995.

The album led Orange 9mm to an appearance on the initial Warped Tour, followed by subsequent tours with hallmark ’90s alt-rock/metal acts such as Korn, Deftones, Sevendust, Helmet, Quicksand, and Biohazard. The lineup surrounding Malik would change over the years, with the band releasing one more major label full-length on Atlantic in 1996 (Tragic) — Traynor would exit the group shortly after — plus a final LP on indie imprint Ng in 1999 (Pretend I’m Human).
