Netflix is one of the primary sources of water cooler conversation in the streaming era. The platform is filled to the brim with binge-able content just waiting to be discovered. Thanks to a seemingly endless supply of content, the streamer became not only a source of conversation but also a source of comfort for many of us during the lockdown phase of the COVID pandemic. When everything was uncertain and scary, the Netflix lineup gave us the chance to shut off the outside world and escape into fantasy for a brief time.
It wasn’t just you or I who turned to Netflix for comfort during the pandemic, however. Even decorated filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino sought comfort and escape in the streamer’s content library. More specifically, Tarantino latched onto a horrifying Mike Flanagan series during lockdown.
In a 2020 conversation with The Jerusalem Post, the Kill Bill director expressed an enthusiastic appreciation for said program, telling the outlet, “My favorite series, with no competition, is The Haunting of Hill House.”
That is a really enthusiastic response. However, Hill House is more than deserving of the accolades it has received from Tarantino among others. The program won favor with both fans and critics as a show that delivers well-timed scares and subtext on the human condition. Many connected with the series’ realistic depictions of trauma and grief, as well as the show’s effectively written and rendered lead characters.
The setup for The Haunting of Hill House goes like this:
This modern reimagining of the Shirley Jackson novel follows siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults they are forced back together in the face of tragedy and must finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of those ghosts still lurk in their minds, while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House. The ensemble cast includes Oscar winner Timothy Hutton, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas.
