“Radical” Ideas on How to Achieve Equality Through Faith, Respect and Hope

It seems the world has forgotten what real equality is all about. But why is that? What has caused this shift or rift, this great polarization that seems to be occurring? Or has inequality been there all along?

Embark on an immersive journey in Radical Equality as author Priscilla Doremus examines the history of both equality and inequality and how culture frames our vantage point. Explore the things that unite us and divide us as a people — a human race. Consider a different perspective on race theory and discover a place of hope on which equality can be built and shared by all people. Real unity is obtainable — if we are willing.

In this Q&A, we talk with Priscilla Doremus about faith, cultural pride and finding common ground.

What inspired you to write Radical Equality?

The desires for both unity and truth were the inspiration for Radical Equality.

How do you respond to those who might challenge the idea of rejecting race as a societal construct?

I would say that while race may be a societal construct in many places, it doesn’t have to be this way. Therein lies the hope.

How does your personal faith influence your perspective on equality?

My personal faith in Jesus is the foundation, core and root of everything I believe about equality.  James 2:9 states, “But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law” (NLT).  As my personal faith grows, I learn to love others as God does, equally.

You mention that beliefs, rather than race, unite or divide people. How can individuals with vastly different beliefs find common ground?

Great question! I would encourage them to examine creation. There are core themes in all of creation that we as humans share. If we focus on these, we are standing on common ground.

You discuss pride as a key factor in division. How can people balance cultural pride with unity?

I think gratitude and respect are critical in balancing cultural pride with unity. We can appreciate and respect another’s culture or perspective that is different from our own while exhibiting curiosity rather than anger and fear over the differences.

What impact do you hope this book will have on discussions about race, culture, and faith?

I hope Radical Equality will prompt honest discussions about God, faith, unity and the cultural biases each of us may have. I hope it will prompt us all to look both inward, examining ourselves, and outward, toward the responsibility we all share before God with regard to peace and unity.
