Rob Zombie previously enjoyed success as the frontman of White Zombie, broke out as a solo artist, and then transitioned into filmmaking. He’s a versatile creator and a jack of all trades. But there’s one trade to which this jack won’t soon return. I’m talking about television. Zombie tried his hand at directing TV several years back and came away convinced he’d rather invest his energy elsewhere.

When he was promoting The Lords of Salem, the House of 1000 Corpses director made time to speak with Collider. When the outlet asked if he was eager to direct more TV, the filmmaker-turned-musician openly admitted that he isn’t in a rush to return to television anytime soon. His stint as a TV director taught him a valuable lesson: Directing television is very different than directing a movie.

“When I did CSI: Miami, I tried to f–k with it, as much as possible,” Zombie said. “Not like I thought it was broken and I was trying to fix it, but just to give it a different flavor. But, they don’t really want that.  Obviously, they have a formula that’s been working and they don’t want to change it.  That kind of soured me to TV, truthfully.”

I can’t say that I blame him. When you direct TV, you work for the showrunner. You only get so much control. It’s a very different experience than helming a feature film. To start in movies and segue into television would likely be a rude awakening. With that said, I suspect directing TV has its perks. There’s probably less stress involved. Not to mention, people usually direct their frustration at the showrunner before going after the director of any given episode.

If you’re curious to track down the episode Zombie directed, it’s from season eight and it’s titled L.A. Seasons six through 10 of the series are currently available on Hulu.

The setup for CSI Miami is this:

Follows a Florida team of forensic investigators who use cutting-edge scientific methods and old-fashioned police work to solve crimes. Horatio Caine (David Caruso), a former homicide detective, heads a group of investigators who work crimes amid the steamy tropical surroundings and cultural crossroads of Miami.

That’s all we have for you, for the time being. Stay tuned to the site for more sizzling hot takes as we successfully unearth them. If you’d like to chat more about Rob Zombie’s directorial prowess, hit me up on Threads @FunWithHorror.
