A Saturday Night Live docuseries is coming to Peacock in January to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary.
Titled SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, the four-episode docuseries will feature more than 60 contributors, including alumni from the sketch comedy variety show. Diving into SNL’s rich history, the first episode “Five Minutes” will offer a detailed look at the show’s audition process.
The next episode, “Written By: A Week Inside the SNL Writers Room,” will capture the writing process from script to screen, with the third episode, “More Cowbell,” going behind the scenes of the beloved sketch. The final episode, “Season 11: The Weird Year,” will focus on the show’s pivotal 11th season.
SNL50 comes from executive producer Morgan Neville, who has helmed documentaries like 20 Feet from Stardom and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Directors Robert Alexander, Marshall Curry, Neil Berkeley, and Jason Zeldes each helmed their own episode.
“I’ve been obsessed with Saturday Night Live as long as I can remember,” Neville said in a statement. “For SNL50, I’ve been lucky to collaborate with some of my favorite independent filmmakers to tell some deeper stories of SNL. Taken together, these standalone episodes give a new perspective of SNL and what makes it work.”
All four episodes will premiere on January 16th, 2025 on Peacock.
SNL is in the midst of its 50th season, with recent highlights including Charli XCX’s debut as host, the rise of Marcello Hernández’s Domingo character, and a sketch impersonating Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono.
