Sheriff Chris Nanos Reveals Why No Arrests Have Been Made

    What To Know

    • Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos explained why no arrests have been made in the Nancy Guthrie case.
    • The sheriff emphasized the importance of thoroughness to avoid wrongful arrests.
    • Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since January 31.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos just revealed why no arrests have been made yet in the Nancy Guthrie case, more than four months after Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother was abducted in Tucson, Arizona.

During an interview with KOLD-TV published on June 1, Nanos offered insight into where the case stands as Nancy, 84, remains missing. The sheriff was asked how he felt about the investigation and the chances of finding Nancy at this point in the case.

“You know, these cases are difficult,” he admitted. “And it’s not just this case. A number of our cases come to us where it requires a lot of work from other people. It’s just not a detective goes out there, talks to somebody, and we can make an arrest.”

Nanos added, “This is a very sensitive case. But what really makes it prolonged is we do rely on labs for the digital part of this case, which is very critical.”

As the case drags on, Nanos pointed out one “positive.”

“If I were to say there’s a positive to this, it is that people are working, doing their best to stay within those rules so that they have that understanding that, look, nobody wants to arrest the wrong person,” he told KOLD-TV. “We want to make sure that DNA doesn’t just identify a suspect. It also exonerates those who are innocent.”

He continued, “So it’s a tedious process, we get that. And especially when you add in all the other complexities of one DNA on top of the other and the separation of that. It moves at a snail’s pace, I guess, for some. But for my investigative team and for me, we look at it as this is doing exactly what we need it to do.”

Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on January 31, with the investigation launching on February 1 after her family reported her missing. Since then, the FBI has released stills and clips from a doorbell camera of a masked suspect on the 84-year-old’s front porch. Additionally, Savannah has offered a $1 million reward and reportedly dropped $500,000 on a private investigator. No suspect has been named, as of writing.
