The Ghostbusters franchise is alive and well, even if Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire wasn’t as big a hit as they had hoped last year ($200M globally).
Not only is Netflix working on an animated series, but Sony and Netflix are teaming up on an animated Ghostbusters movie.
Kris Pearn (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2) was attached to direct back in 2024, and now, Jeff Snieder is reporting that Dollface writer Sam Jarvis is currently penning a new draft.
Pearn is still attached to direct, and new info reveals that this film will be a wholly new entry in the franchise.
When announced, Deadline explained, “Not only does the project mean to expand on the Ghostbusters universe, sources close to the development of this film see this as something that could do for the IP what the Beyond the Spider-Verse films have done for Spider-Man.”
For the series, Elliott Kalan was announced as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) will produce for Sony Pictures Animation.
The Ghostbusters franchise was already realized in animated form with The Real Ghostbusters in the 1980s and Extreme Ghostbusters in the 1990s.
