Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” Movie Becomes Top-Grossing Concert Film of All Time with $97 Million Opening

It’s official: Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film is the highest-grossing concert film in domestic box office history — and it only took her four days to achieve the feat.

According to Variety, the film earned between $95 and $97 million in its opening weekend, surpassing the entire $73 million domestic box office total of the previous record holder, 2011’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

The film received a surprise early opening on Thursday, October 12th, and went to a wider release on Friday, October 13th (a lucky day for Swift, whose favorite number is 13). Across 3,850 North American theaters, with a total of 4,150 international venues, tickets went for $19.89 for adults and $13.13 for children and seniors. Through pre-sales alone, the movie broke the single-day sales record at AMC.

Michael Jackson’s posthumous 2009 concert film, This Is It, currently holds the world-wide record for the top-grossing concert film with a global box office total of $380 million.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was filmed in August across six shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. According to The New York Times, the film cost a total of $15 million to make, and Swift stands to earn 57 percent of total ticket revenue — or, $55 million from the opening weekend alone.

In her review for Consequence, associate editor Mary Siroky lauded “The Eras Tour” film for capturing the magic of Swift’s mammoth tour.

Speaking of which, Swift will resume “The Eras Tour” next month with shows in Argentina and Brasil. In 2024, she’s slated to head to Asia, Australia, and Europe, before returning to North America for a final leg. Tickets for the international dates can be purchased here, and you can secure your seats for her North American stops here.
