The Most-Watched Movie On Netflix Is A “Terrifying” Underwater Nightmare

    Netflix

When I saw Jaws at the tender young age of four, I was convinced that sharks were everywhere, including indoor pools, the bathtub, the toilet, and of course any large body of water. While I’ve conquered said fear, Xavier Gens brings that fear back to life with his new film Under Paris, where a giant shark appears in the Seine and wreaks havoc on the city of love.

In Under Paris, per Netflix, “In order to save Paris from an international bloodbath, a grieving scientist is forced to face her tragic past when a giant shark appears in the Seine.“

While a shark in the Seine sounds ridiculous, Gens is able to create something truly terrifying just as the summer months begin heating up. Kudos are deserved for a director and their team who are able to make a film like this a piece of serious horror filmmaking.

Gens directed the film with a script he co-wrote with Maud Heywang and Yannick Dahan. This director is no stranger to the horror genre as his feature film debut Frontier(s) is one of the prime examples of the New French Extremity movement. His debut is soaked in blood and fear, which is a theme that flows throughout his entire career, including films such as the creature feature Cold Skin and the action thriller Mayhem! His eye for stylish violence but affecting stories is perfect for a story such as this one, which is already earning praise for being one of the best shark films in recent memory.

See what viewers are saying about Gens’ latest film below:

Xavier Gens’ “Under Paris” is one of the most brutally nihilistic, engrossing and genuinely terrifying shark movies made in the last few years, the BALLS Gens had to go for a third act and an ending like that is nothing short of awe-inspiring, just so grim yet captivating ??? pic.twitter.com/8ALGYn3ASO

Some wonky shark CGI aside, I had fun with Gens’ new killer shark popcorn muncher! I could do nothing but laugh with maniacal glee at how hard the last act of this one goes.

Honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a Netflix original this much.
Fun, slightly preposterous scenario, solid performances, ecological concerns and some genuinely awesome effects work. Also, the third act is properly bonkers. #UnderParis pic.twitter.com/BFBcNA6Hap

Under Paris has absolutely no right to be as good as it is. This is Creature Feature goodness through and through.

The catacombs scene, my god, 10/10 anxiety inducing horror ?? pic.twitter.com/lPMmNobsWB

I mentioned several times that I was going to watch Under Paris as soon as it came out.

I love a good shark movie, and this was the best one I’ve seen since The Shallows. It has a few “What are you thinking!?” moments, but I was entertained throughout.

    And the ENDING. ? pic.twitter.com/aYLjeb1phq

I love a movie that just doesn’t give a single fuck and goes all in on the over the top. This is what #UnderParis does for almost two hours and it was glorious. Sure the CGI don’t always look great, but it was such a fun ride. pic.twitter.com/PCOLW4o5F4

Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Anaïs Parello, and Léa Léviant star in the film.

Under Paris is streaming now on Netflix.
