No Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman witches in Practical Magic 2 nor zombies in Resident Evil will stand in the way of Odysseus’ hold on additional Imax screens throughout the month of September.
Christopher Nolan’s highest grossing movie at $1.55 billion and Universal’s second highest grossing ever after Jurassic World ($1.67B), is getting an extended run in 70MM Imax through September, bringing the large format exhibitor’s run to 11 weeks. There will be additional showtimes available at 39 Imax 70MM auditoriums through Sept. 30.
The Odyssey is already the highest grossing Imax release of all time with $457M at the global box office repping close to a third of the pic’s entire worldwide haul. Imax 70mm screenings alone have earned $66M across 41 locations worldwide for a massive $1.6M per screen average.
The Odyssey is the first-ever feature shot entirely with Imax film cameras. The Imax 15/65mm Cameras deliver close to 10x the resolution of conventional 35mm film and 3x the resolution of standard, 5-perf 65mm film cameras. The feature take of Homer’s poem was shot with a combination of original and new Imax Film Cameras. Developed in close collaboration with Academy Award winners Christopher Nolan and director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema, the new camera is named “The Keighley” in honor of Imax’s late Chief Quality Officer David Keighley and his wife, Patricia, both pioneers of the 70mm format. The new camera delivers enhanced image quality while incorporating updated software, improved functionality, and reduced noise.
The Odyssey features Imax’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio for the entire film. With the image filling the giant Imax screen from top to bottom. In select IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm Film locations, the film is presented entirely in Imax’s towering 1.43:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio.
