‘The Rocky Horror Show’ Sets Broadway House Record With .2M Take

Broadway‘s production roster continued its usual summertime trimming last week, with its count of 35 shows down by three from the previous week. Still, box office held fairly steady in the June heat, with total receipts of $36,698,946 down just 6% from the previous week and 7% from this time last season.

Attendance for the week ending June 28 was 291,840, down 5% from the previous week and 2% year-to-year.

While 24 of the 35 productions reported at least some box office downturn – some more significantly than others – one show bucked the trend with a best-ever number: The Rocky Horror Show grossed $1,215,225, filling 97% of seats at Studio 54 and setting a new house record at the venue. The previous record of $1,212,949 was scored by Oedipus starring Mark Strong and Lesley Manville in its final week in February of this year.

Among the 24 shows that did some wilting last week, some of the more noticeable drops were The Outsiders, down $116,020 to $922,668; Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, down $98,188 to $958,428; Wicked, down $97,419 to $1,208,120; Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) down $88,469 to $528,882; and Titanique, down $61,899 to $701,516. Should be noted, however, that The Outsiders, Joe Turner and Wicked still filled at least 90% of their seats.

Three productions closed last week, and each reported gains as last-chancers bought up tickets. Death Becomes Her was up $342,681 to $1,231,981, filling 94% of seats at the Lunt-Fontanne; Giant, at $1,605,805, was up $137,215, doing its usual sell-out business at the Music Box; and The Fear of 13 was at $690,660, up $181,596, with attendance at the James Earl Jones at 88% of capacity.

In addition to Giant, other sell-outs were Death of a Salesman, Every Brilliant Thing (99.9%), Hamilton, Oh, Mary! (99.8%) and Ragtime.

The Five Top Earners for the week Hamilton, $2,157,909; The Lion King, $1,942,322; Death of a Salesman, $1,926,016 (7 performances); MJ, $1,650,542; and Giant‘s $1,605,805.

Even with the overall dip, only five productions fell at or below the 70% of capacity mark, and most were fairly long-running musicals: Chicago, $523,440, 61%; Moulin Rouge!, $716,814, 67%; Six, $536,022, 64%; The Great Gatsby, $711,219, 69%; Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), $528,882, 70%.

In the 5th week of the 2026-27 season, Broadway has grossed $189,748,286, down about 11% from last year at this time, with total attendance of 1,540,391 down 4%.
