In its second weekend, The Fantastic Four: First Steps scored a shaky $39 million, pushing its 10-day haul to a substantial $197 million and retaining its throne as the top film at the domestic box office. As the superhero juggernaut continues its reign, four new wide releases step into theaters, eager to dethrone the champ.
This weekend brings a fresh take on the classic body-swap comedy with Freakier Friday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively, 20 years after their iconic identity crisis. Now, Anna juggles life as a mom with a soon-to-be stepdaughter, and Tess is adjusting to the challenges of blending families. As they navigate the chaos, the pair discovers that lightning may just strike twice. Freakier Friday hits 3,975 theaters across North America this weekend.
Also arriving in wide release is the supernatural horror Weapons, a chilling tale of a community grappling with the mysterious disappearance of all but one child from an entire class. Starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Benedict Wong, and directed by Zach Cregger, the film launches in 3,202 theaters, promising a gripping blend of horror and suspense.
Meanwhile, Sketch, a comedy starring Tony Hale and D’Arcy Carden, moves from 2,006 to 2,155 locations after its Wednesday debut. The film made a strong $1.96 million on its opening day and looks poised to build on that momentum through the weekend.
Lastly, the found footage horror Strange Harvest, which blends elements of true crime and horror, enters theaters in 771 locations. The film delves into the return of a notorious serial killer, “Mr. Shiny,” after a chilling 20-year hiatus.
Wrapping up the top five this weekend, The Bad Guys 2, last week’s fresh face, adds a modest eight theaters in its second outing. Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four holds steady as the reigning box office champ, though it sheds 525 locations, still showing in a robust 3,600 theaters. And The Naked Gun, not missing a beat, expands its reach from 3,344 to 3,363 locations as it settles into its second week.
Looking ahead to next weekend, four new wide releases are set to hit the big screen. These include Americana, Eli Roth Presents: Jimmy and Stiggs, Highest 2 Lowest, and Nobody 2. The latter is expected to debut in around 3,200 theaters, setting up an exciting new wave of competition at the box office.
