Theater counts: Mickey 17 fends off a swarm of newcomers to remain widest release

Last weekend’s box office was mostly as expected, with Mickey 17 debuting in the number one spot, earning a smidgen over $19 million in its three-day start. The film has since accrued another $5.5 million and currently enjoys a six-day total of $24.57 million. This week’s race is anyone’s game, as five new wide releases make their way into theaters, including Black Bag and Novocaine, both of which will give everything they have to claim that top spot.

Making its arrival in 3,365 cinemas, Novocaine follows a sheltered bank executive who has an inability to feel pain. When his love interest is kidnapped during a bank robbery, he must conjure up the strength and courage to get her back. Jack Quaid stars as Nate Caine, while Amber Midthunder plays his love interest, Sherry Mangrave. The feature is directed by the filmmaking duo of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who have together helmed four previous films dating back to 2015.

Also making its debut this weekend is the Steven Soderbergh spy thriller, Black Bag. The movie features an impressive ensemble list of top Hollywood talent, including Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Naomie Harris, and Pierce Brosnan, to name a few. Soderbergh’s storied career spans back to 1989, and he most recently directed the supernatural thriller Presence, which debuted back in January. Black Bag will start out in 2,705 locations.

Showing in 2,827 movie houses this weekend is the animated comedy, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. The film follows the iconic characters of Porky Pig and Daffy Duck as they discover a secret alien mind control plot at the local bubble gum factory. The two are determined to save their town without driving each other looney in the process.

Beginning in 1,764 theaters is the psychological thriller Opus. The film follows a young writer who is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago, but soon she finds herself in the middle of a twisted plan involving him and his group of sycophants. The movie is directed by newcomer Mark Anthony Green, helming his first feature.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, with Mickey 17 retaining its opening count of 3,807 heading into its second weekend. Lastly, Captain America: Brave New World is still widely available in its fifth weekend, available in 3,250 theaters.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see a wide array of films make their way into theaters, with the long-awaited Disney’s Snow White leading the way. Other films making their theatrical debuts include Ash, the Flying Lotus directed sci-fi feature, sports drama Magazine Dreams and the 1950s mafia crime drama, The Alto Knights. The latter is projected to start out in approximately 2,500 locations, while Snow White will take off in approximately 4,000 theaters.
