Theater counts: Minecraft digs up another weekend as widest release

It was number one and two for Warner Bros. at the weekend box office, with newcomer Sinners taking the lead and ending the reign of A Minecraft Movie as the Michael B. Jordan film collected a handsome $48 million in its weekend debut. The film currently enjoys a six-day total of $71 million and is poised for another weekend win if it can fend off a new batch of films ready to challenge the current titleholder. For another week, however, A Minecraft Movie will continue to be the most accessible film in the land.

The widest of the new movies opening this weekend is the action-thriller, The Accountant 2, starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. Starting its run in 3,610 venues, the film follows an accountant who launders money for some of the most notorious criminals on earth. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” the accountant, named Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax, to help. The sequel is directed by Gavin O’Connor, who helmed the original film, which went on to earn over $86 million in North America and another $66 million from international showings.

Also making its way into theaters this weekend is Until Dawn. The horror feature is based on the video game of the same name and follows a group of friends who, in search of their missing friend, head into the remote valley, only to find themselves murdered, reawakened, and trapped inside a time loop, forcing them to relive their nightmare over and over. The David F. Sandberg-directed movie will make its way into 3,055 movie houses.

Rolling into 832 movie houses this weekend is the documentary Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie. The film traces the enduring legacy of pioneering comics Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, featuring interviews, sketches, and never-before-seen footage spanning the duo’s five-decade career. The result is an unlikely story of friendship and fame, turmoil and defiance, rebellion, and ultimately—redemption.

Coming back to theaters for its 20th anniversary is Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith. The film scored well above $800 million globally in its original run and looks to add a nice chunk to that by playing in 2,775 North American cinemas this weekend.

Expanding from four locations last weekend to 1,153 this weekend is the adventure film The Legend of Ochi. The movie follows a young farm girl who is taught to fear the reclusive creatures known as the Ochi, but when a baby ochi is left behind by its pack, she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to reunite it with its family.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the addition of three new wide releases making their entrance into theaters. These include the horror film Rosario, the Nicolas Cage psychological thriller The Surfer, and the highly anticipated superhero feature from Walt Disney, with the release of Thunderbolts*, which is projected to arrive in approximately 4,200 theaters.
