Last weekend’s box office passed without much flair as both Regretting You and Black Phone 2 vied for the top spot, with the latter ultimately taking the prize for the second time in its three-week run. This weekend will see an abundance of newcomers burst into theaters looking to unseat the current box office leaders.
Of the new films that are making their theatrical launch this weekend, Predator: Badlands is set to arrive in 3,725 movie houses to become the new widest release in the land. Set on a remote planet in the future, a young Predator, outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in a girl and embarks on a treacherous journey to find the ultimate adversary. The movie serves as the ninth feature in the Predator franchise, one that has racked up well over $741 million since the original installment released back in 1987. The latest series stars Elle Fanning and newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, while being directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed 2022’s Prey.
Making its entrance in 2,410 theaters this weekend is the Texas-set biographical drama, Sarah’s Oil. The film charts the incredible true story of Sarah Rector, an African American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, who believes there is oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted and whose faith is proven right. The film stars Naya Desir-Johnson as Sarah, while Zachary Levi portrays Bert Smith, a prospector enlisted by Sarah to evaluate the land and her claim. Sonequa Martin-Green and Garret Dillahunt provide supporting roles in the film.
Also opening wide this weekend is the psychological thriller Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. Based on the 2012 novel, “Die, My Love,” the film follows Grace, a writer and young mother, who slowly slips into madness. Locked away in an old house in Montana, she acts increasingly agitated and erratic, leaving her companion, Jackson, ever more worried and helpless. The movie premiered at Cannes 2025 and will open in 1,983 theaters throughout North America this weekend.
Another historical drama making its cinematic arrival this weekend is the James Vanderbilt-directed Nuremberg. The movie charts the work of unyielding chief prosecutor Robert H. Jackson, whose task is to ensure the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust, while a US Army psychiatrist is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring. The movie, based on the 2013 novel “The Nazi and the Psychiatrist,” will be available in 1,802 locations throughout North America.
Opening in 950 movie venues this weekend is the newest animated feature from Viva Pictures, with the release of racing film, Grand Prix of Europe. The film follows Edda, a young mouse bursting with dreams of becoming a champion racer. When her father’s small theme park business is on the line, she seizes an unlikely opportunity: she disguises herself as her racing idol, Ed, and slips into the driver’s seat of the prestigious “Grand Prix of Europe.”
Other notable films opening in wide release this weekend include the Christy Martin boxing biopic, Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney, and Chicken Run, scurrying back into 723 cinemas for its 25th anniversary release. We will update the former releases once the information becomes available.
Rounding out the top five this weekend are the current chart toppers, Regretting You, Black Phone 2, and Chainsaw Man—The Movie: Reze Arc, occupying the second, third, and fifth place spots by playing in 3,196, 2,943, and 2,285 locations, respectively.
Looking ahead to next weekend we witness the arrival of three new wide releases, including horror feature, Keeper, ensemble feature, Now You See Me Now You Don’t, and lastly, the Glenn Powell dystopian action-thriller The Running Man. The Running Man will debut in approximately 3,400 locations while Now You See Me Now You Don’t is set to begin in approximately 3,300 theaters.
