The weekend box office was all Predator: Badlands, as the latest in the franchise gobbled up just over $40 million in its opening volley. The film remains the widest release in the land, but will have a much steeper test in its second frame, as three newcomers are set to challenge the current leader.
The widest footprint of those new movies comes from The Running Man. The film stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a struggling working-class man with a sick daughter who, as a last resort, agrees to enter the nation’s most-watched television spectacle, “The Running Man.” Contestants (“Runners”) are given a 12-hour head start and then hunted by elite assassins (“Hunters”) and an audience of civilians; if they survive 30 days, they win a life-changing prize. The Edgar Wright-directed feature is the second adaptation of the Stephen King novel after the 1987 film of the same name. The Running Man will start out in 3,534 theaters.
Also debuting in wide release this weekend is the heist film Now You See Me Now You Don’t. The latest in the Now You See Me franchise follows the return of the Four Horsemen in their boldest heist yet, stealing a priceless diamond from a powerful criminal empire. As old allies and new recruits clash, the line between trick and truth blurs, and the ultimate illusion may be the one they never saw coming. The movie will begin its run in 3,403 movie houses.
Making its way into 1,950 locations this weekend is the latest horror venture from Oz Perkins with the release of Keeper. The film follows Malcolm and Liz, a couple who retreat to a secluded cabin for an anniversary getaway. However, when Malcolm abruptly leaves for the city, Liz finds herself alone and soon confronted by an unspeakable evil that lurks within the house’s hidden past. Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland star as Liz and Malcolm, respectively.
Releasing in 752 venues this weekend is King Ivory. The movie follows Tulsa, Oklahoma narcotics cop Layne West as he takes on a deadly drug network after his teenage son becomes addicted, confronting cartels, mobsters, and a powerful trafficker known as “King Ivory.”
Coming back to theaters this weekend, just in time for next weekend’s debut of Wicked: For Good is 2024’s Wicked. The $755 million worldwide earner will make its return in 2,195 cinemas throughout North America.
Rounding out the top five widest releases this weekend is the current topliner, Predator: Badlands, as it retains its opening count of 3,725 locations. Occupying the third largest footprint is Regretting You, still showing in a solid 2,709 theaters, and lastly, Black Phone 2 is playing in 2,419 locations.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of three new wide releases, including Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser; SISU: Road to Revenge; and the release of the highly anticipated follow-up to 2024’s Wicked with the debut of Wicked: For Good. Rental Family and SISU: Road to Revenge are projected to open in 1,600 and 2,000, respectively. We will update the counts for Wicked once they are released.
