Theater counts: Snow White repels an onslaught of newcomers to remain widest release

Despite a somewhat lackluster opening performance, Disney’s Snow White nevertheless dominated the domestic box office over the weekend, outpacing its nearest competitor by $38 million in box office receipts, to the tune of $42.21 million in its first three days. While the live-action film should stay on top of the fray, the competition will get tighter as a slew of oncomers will do their best to try to topple the reigning champ.

Showing in 3,262 movie houses this weekend is the latest Jason Statham action flick with the release of A Working Man. The film follows Levon Cade (Statham) as he left his “profession” behind to live a simple life working construction and spending time with his daughter. But when his boss’s teenage daughter vanishes, he’s called upon to re-employ the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. The movie is directed by David Ayer, who also directed Statham in last year’s The Beekeeper. That film went on to score over $66 million domestically in its eleven-week run, while earning $86 million from international play for a global total of $152 million.

Starting out in 2,842 locations is the latest from Universal with the release of The Woman in the Yard. The psychological horror is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who last directed a horror feature in 2009, with the release of Orphan, a movie that went on to score over $78 million at the global box office.

Also making its debut this weekend is the film Death of a Unicorn. The comedy horror stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father and daughter who accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties. Tea Leoni, Will Poulter, and Richard E. Grant co-star. Death of a Unicorn will start out in 3,050 theaters.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, with Snow White retaining its opening count of 4,200 heading into its second weekend. Lastly, The Alto Knights hold steady from its opening weekend with 2,651 venues.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see a wide array of films make their way into theaters, with the widest coming in the form of A Minecraft Movie, expected to make its entrance in approximately 4,200 cinemas. Also opening in wide release is IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America.
