Theater counts: Springsteen stands alone as this weekend’s widest release

Despite opening in just 3,003 theaters, newcomer Chainsaw Man—The Movie: Reze Arc slashed its way to the top of the weekend box office, carving out an impressive $18 million in its debut. The anime feature was trailed by another fresh contender, Regretting You, which earned $13.69 million in its opening frame. The newcomers pushed former champ Black Phone 2 down to third place in its sophomore weekend. With Halloween weekend in full swing, audiences are being treated to a menagerie of new releases, some hitting theaters as early as Wednesday, and others gearing up for a Friday debut.

Great Scott! Back to the Future is revving up the DeLorean and blasting back onto the big screen for its 40th anniversary, hitting 2,290 theaters across North America. Audiences old and new can once again join Marty McFly and Doc Brown as they tear through time, powered by 1.21 gigawatts of nostalgia, no flux capacitor required.

The widest of this weekend’s new releases comes from Briarcliff Entertainment with Stitch Head, an animated adventure based on the beloved novel of the same name. The film tells the tale of a small, forgotten creature who dwells in a long-abandoned castle until he’s awakened by a Mad Professor. Soon, Stitch Head finds himself defending the professor’s wildly imaginative creations from the wary townspeople of Grubber Nubbin. Opening on Wednesday across 2,162 theaters, the film marks a family-friendly offering for the Halloween frame.

Also opening on October 29 was the Jan Komasa-directed political thriller, Anniversary. The movie includes a star-studded ensemble cast including Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Mckenna Grace, and Zoey Deutch, among others. The film charts a close-knit family caught in the turmoil of a controversial rising movement known as “The Change.” Anniversary will continue to play in 809 venues throughout the weekend and next week.

Making its debut in 700 North American theaters is the Arkansas-set thriller, Violent Ends. The movie follows an honest man, brought up in a crime family, whose only legacy is violence in this Southern revenge thriller of star-crossed lovers set against the backdrop of the Ozark Mountains. The film stars Billy Magnussen and is directed by John-Michael Powell.

Making its wide expansion this weekend is Bugonia. The Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film, which opened last weekend, has already secured $944,990 from just 17 locations in its first six days and looks to collect more as it moves into 2,043 theaters this weekend.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, enjoying solo widest release honors as it heads into its second weekend. The aforementioned Regretting You slides into second this weekend as it adds 32 theaters for a total of 3,425. Still playing in a solid 3,301 cinemas this weekend is Black Phone 2. The current box office leader, Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc, occupies the fourth widest release, and lastly, Tron: Ares lands as fifth widest release, playing in 2,575 locations.

Looking ahead to next weekend, moviegoers can expect a plethora of new releases making their big-screen debut. Among them are Christy, the Christy Martin biopic starring Sydney Sweeney; the 1940s courtroom drama Nuremberg; the animated auto-racing feature, Grand Prix of Europe; the Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson thriller, Die, My Love; the historical-drama, Sarah’s Oil; and last, but not least, the highly-anticipated Predator: Badlands. The latter is projected to arrive in approximately 3,600 theaters.
