Theater counts: The Conjuring: Last Rites haunts 3,802 theaters

Weapons found itself at the top of the domestic box office over the weekend, scoring $10.47 million in its fourth weekend for a 24-day total of $132.66 million, outpointing the 50th anniversary release of Jaws and newcomer Caught Stealing by roughly $830,000 and $2.67 million, respectively. Despite its strong run at the top, it will slip out of first place (for good this time) as a flurry of new films make their way into theaters.

The widest release this weekend comes from the latest in the popular The Conjuring franchise with the debut of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The film, set in 1986, follows a retired ghost-hunting couple, Ed and Lorraine, whose quiet life is shattered when the Smurl family in Pennsylvania calls for help: a seemingly ordinary mirror gifted to one of their daughters unleashes a malevolent supernatural force. The franchise has scared up well over $2 billion from nine previous films, starting just over 12 years ago. Last Rites will begin its theatrical run in 3,802 cinemas, including IMAX locations.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the animated Christian drama, Light of the World. Opening in 2,075 venues, the film comes from the Salvation Poem Project and recounts the life of Jesus as told through John the Apostle’s eyes.

Last week we saw the 50th anniversary release of Jaws, while this weekend provides another opportunity to see a cult classic on the big screen, this time in the way of The Breakfast Club, as that film celebrates its 40th anniversary. The John Hughes-directed feature made $5.11 million during its opening weekend back in February 1985 while playing in 1,071 theaters. The teen coming-of-age comedy-drama went on to score over $50 million at the domestic box office. This weekend will see the kids from the “Brat Pack” re-enter theaters, playing in 1,130 cinemas.

Arriving to theaters for the first time is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. The historical drama consists of a live stage recording of the popular stage musical, which in turn was inspired by the 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton. The film was originally scheduled for release on October 15, 2021, but the studio opted to instead stream it on Disney+. The Thomas Kail-directed movie will open this weekend in 1,825 movie houses.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is Caught Stealing, which retains its opening count of 3,578 locations from its opening foray. Occupying the third place spot is the current box office leader, Weapons, losing 132 locations this weekend but still widely available in 3,284 theaters. Next is Freakier Friday, still showing in a solid 3,125 cinemas. Lastly, The Roses also keeps its opening count for its second weekend, still playing in 2,700 locations.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see five wide releases make their way into theaters, for which four studios have reported estimated counts. The largest footprint at this time appears to be Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. That film is projected to arrive in approximately 3,500 theaters. Anime feature Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle isn’t far behind as that film is projected to start in about 3,000 locations. Lastly, Toy Story will re-release in approximately 1,300 movie houses. Meanwhile, The Long Walk looks to make its theatrical debut in approximately 2,500 locations.
