    Hereditary on Netflix

Are you a Netflix subscriber? Would you like to have your day ruined? If you answered ‘yes’ to both of the previous questions, I’ve got a real treat (?) in store for you. One of the most devastating horror films of the past 10 years is leaving Netflix later this month. The flick in question is Ari Aster’s Hereditary. If you’re a masochist with a couple of hours to kill, you still have time to pay the picture a repeat visit. Keep reading for the full rundown.

I’m glad I own Hereditary on disc and don’t have to rely on streaming availability because I really have to be in the right headspace to watch it. I have a complicated relationship with the film. I love the set design, the ambiance, the stellar performances, and the cult element. However, the depiction of trauma is so painstakingly realistic that I typically have to take an intermission partway through to collect myself. Toni Collette’s performance is so powerful that I completely forget she’s an actor in a movie. That’s a testament to her prowess as a thespian and just goes to show how biased The Academy is when it comes to genre fare. She deserved a Best Actress nod. Full stop.

In case you’re not familiar with the setup:

When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.

    When does Hereditary leave Netflix?

Your last day to watch Hereditary on Netflix is April 14th. The flick isn’t streaming anywhere else as of the publication of this post. So, if you fancy the flick, now might be a good time to pick it up on physical media.

I actually wrote about Hereditary for another writing home recently, chronicling how the film helped me at an all-time low. Collette’s performance is so immersive that I felt a trauma bond with her while I was grieving a loss of my own. The very idea that I connected that deeply speaks to the picture’s magnitude.

In addition to Collette, the film also stars Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, and Alex Wolff. Aster takes the sole screenwriting credit, in addition to helming the project.

There you have it. Hereditary leaves Netflix soon. Make haste to revisit it if you have the urge. Stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more enticing updates on which films are coming to and going from your favorite streaming platforms.
