Ticket prices increased 5% in Q3 vs. 2024

2025 has been a roller coaster for movies in theaters, starting with a weak first quarter, followed by a second quarter full of surprises, a slower third quarter, and now a fourth quarter that looks increasingly promising with several heavy hitters on the way.

In Q3, despite a decline in overall box office performance compared to 2024, the average ticket price reached $11.79, with an annual inflation rate of 5%, consistent with the second quarter. While attendance fell year over year, average ticket prices continued to rise due to ongoing pricing strategies, the expansion of premium formats, and alternative content that maximizes revenue. For example, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle generated $133M during the quarter and became the highest-grossing domestic foreign-language IMAX release. IMAX also reported record Q3 revenue, further demonstrating the growing consumer appetite for premium formats.

Our model relies on average ticket price data reported in SEC filings from three major theater chains: AMC, Cinemark, and Cineplex. This data is modeled against historical averages previously reported by the Cinema United organization (through 2021) and The Cinema Foundation’s 2022 Theatrical Market Report. Beginning in 2025, we updated our model using additional data from our partners, resulting in revised estimates starting from 2022.

The exact parameters for the model, derived from our most recent analysis, are shown in the table below. Historically, the model has demonstrated a strong alignment with the acknowledged industry benchmark, with an R-squared of 96%.

The chart below compares our estimates with the official figures reported by the trade organizations. While there’s no absolute guarantee of continued precision, our estimates have consistently remained within 20 cents of the official figures.
