Former Scream queen Melissa Barrera released an indirect statement about her termination by Spyglass. The actress doesn’t go into her firing from the company or how she feels about it. Instead, it is a micro-manifesto about her position regarding the war in the Middle East.
Although she does seemingly fire back at her former boss Spyglass for the statement they sent out yesterday accusing her of Anti-Semitism.
“First and foremost I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people,” she wrote.
She then goes on to say she is using her celebrity and platforms to inform people.
“As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.”
“Every person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom.”
“I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom.”
She signs off by saying: “Silence is not an option for me.”
Berrera was set to continue her role as Samantha Carpenter in Scream VII alongside Jenna Ortega who plays her sister in the film. But it appears neither of them will return to the series because Ortega stepped away from the sequel herself, citing a scheduling conflict.
A fan-fueled debate over where the series will go now that its leads aren’t attached has been the topic of discussion around the web. Some are saying they should just end the franchise for now, while others think it could be saved with the return of the original heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). But that may not be possible since Campbell left the franchise herself two years ago over a disparagement of salary.
Some even think the return of the character Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) might save the franchise, even though he died in the first film. Of course, this is all for the filmmakers to decide and iHorror will bring you updates as they become available.
