Village Gossip Fuels a Chilling Death in Tana French’s “The Keeper”

    The Keeper by Tana French

“This triumvirate creates a dynamic tension that consumes every page of the novel, making “The Keeper” unputdownable and creating a mystery for the ages.”

The West Irish village of Ardnakelty is filled with characters who love to gossip about the doings in their close-knit hamlet. They discuss their sheep, and football, but most of the time, they gossip about each other. In The Keeper, the third and final installment of Tana French’s tales about American ex-pat, Cal Hooper, such chatter sparks a mysterious and brutal death.

    A Quiet Life in Ardnakelty

After living in West Ireland for several years, Cal Hooper has established a comfortable place within the community. A retired Chicago cop, he has found tranquility among the emerald hills while making furniture, finding true love and serving as a mentor for a wayward teen, Trey. He’s content to be a good neighbor to the local farmers and share a pint with the guys at Seán Ógs, the local pub. He understands the pecking order in the town and is satisfied with being on the fringe.

Yet, in every town there is a bully, and Ardnakelty has a master, Tommy Monynihan, who loves to throw his weight around. He is a sleazy business executive to whom half the town owes its livelihood, while the other half despises him.

The village’s serenity evaporates into the fog when Rachel, the girlfriend of Tommy’s son, Eugene, disappears and a late-night search party is organized to locate her. Cal, and his dog, Rip, find the girl drown in the frigid currents of the river outside of town.

Gossip and questions about Rachel’s death swirl like the swift waters that almost carried her out to sea. Were Rachel and Eugene having problems? What was Rachel doing at the river’s deserted bridge that night? Did Rachel commit suicide, or was something more sinister at work? If this was murder, who killed her and why?

Just prior to her death, Rachel had visited Cal’s fiancé, Lena, making her one of the last people to see Rachel alive. Lena noticed Rachel appeared troubled, leaving her to wonder what was bothering the girl and whether she could have saved her life.

    Secrets Beneath the Village Surface

After a bit of digging, both Cal and Lena believe there was something more suspicious about Rachel’s death, other than her murder. As they learn the details of Rachel’s life, they uncover a scheme that could damage the entire town, disrupting their peaceful existences.

Town gossip hits a fever pitch, becoming more vicious and targeting Cal, Lena and Trey in the vitriol. To their great misfortune, they are sucked into the dark underbelly of generation-old grudges and power struggles, where the neighbors are set against each other. Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has a motive. Only the dead girl, Rachel, knows how and why she died.

Once again, French’s novel emits an ethereal, atmospheric quality, capturing rural life on the cobblestone streets and pastures of a remote Irish village. In this cautionary tale, she warns the reader not to be seduced by the idyllic landscape. Its residents, through their malicious whisperings, jealousy and poor judgment, can poison even the most beautiful settings.

In The Keeper, French also draws a well-defined caste system among her characters. She fills her working-class Irish villagers with wit, charm and biting humor, makes Tommy Moynihan the consummate greedy entrepreneur, and spotlights Cal as the American outsider struggling to fit in. This triumvirate creates a dynamic tension that consumes every page of the novel, making The Keeper unputdownable and creating a mystery for the ages.

Tana French is the New York Times–bestselling author of nine previous books, including In the Woods, The Searcher and The Hunter. Her novels have sold over eight million copies worldwide and won numerous awards, including the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Barry Awards, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Mystery/Thriller, and the Irish Book Award for Crime Fiction. She lives in Dublin with her family.
