UPDATED Violent Night 2 from 87North and Universal is coming, and it’s set for a Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2026 theatrical release.
The first Tommy Wirkola directed movie, written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, follows an embittered Santa played by Stranger Things‘ David Harbour, as he battles mercenaries who’ve taken a wealthy family hostage in their home. The original pic also starred John Leguizamo, Alex Hassell and Beverly D’Angelo. In the sequel, Santa suits up again. Wirkola is back to helm the Casey and Miller penned sequel.
87North founders Kelly McCormick and David Leitch are back as producers.
Violent Night from Uni bowed during the first weekend of December to $13.4M stateside and legged out to $50M in U.S./Canada and $76M worldwide off a $20M production.
The first weekend in December has always been home to a low budget genre or horror film. The AMC’s Beyonce concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce, did exceptionally well in its start for a concert documentary in the frame, opening to $21.8M (however it dropped like a rock ending its run at $33.8M).
This weekend Universal looks to surprise with the live-action take of the DreamWorks Animation movie, How to Train Your Dragon, which is looking at a $65M-$75M (maybe even much more) and a $175M-$185M global opening. It’s the second live-action take of a classic feature toon to rule at this summer’s box office after Disney’s Lilo & Stitch which will ultimately hit $400M.
