In the latest round of Annecy news, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation are bringing the feature take of Marissa Meyer’s No. 1 bestselling book series, The Lunar Chronicles, to theaters on Nov. 3, 2028.
Noëlle Raffaele is directing (story artist on The Lego Ninjago Movie, The Marvels, Ray Gunn; director of DC Super Hero Girls) this adaptation of the author’s toms which blends sci-fi with fairytales.
“It takes a team of true visionaries to bring a world as rich and daring as The Lunar Chronicles to life. This is the kind of story that feels like it was waiting for just the right moment—and the right people—to be told. It’s thrilling, emotional, and completely unlike anything we’ve seen before,” said Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and Natalie Fischer, CEO of Locksmith Animation. “We’re incredibly proud and can’t wait for audiences to experience it in 2028.”
Christina Steinberg (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Trollhunters, Rise of the Guardians) produces off a screenplay by Lindsey Ferrentino (The Fear of 13, Queen of Versailles, The Artist) and writing partners Kalen Egan & Travis Sentell (Electric Dreams, The Man in the High Castle).
Visionary artist and designer Es Devlin (CBE, London Design Medal recipient) leads the film’s visual world alongside Patrick Hanenberger (Rise of the Guardians) as production designers. Costume design is by acclaimed fashion designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy, founders of the label Rodarte. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is also behind the scenes on this Warner Bros Pictures Animation project.
The Lunar Chronicles is the second film collaboration from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation. The studios are also releasing Bad Fairies from director Megan Nicole Dong on July 23, 2027. Other films on the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation slate include The Cat in the Hat (February 27, 2026), Margie Claus (November 5, 2027), Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (March 17, 2028), and Dynamic Duo (June 30, 2028).
