Watch ‘South Park’ co-creator Matt Stone play drums for Primus

South Park’s Matt Stone joined Primus on drums for a King Crimson cover in Los Angeles this week – watch footage below.

The writer, producer and animator is also a part-time musician and on Wednesday (August 6), he joined Les Claypool’s band at the Greek Theater for a version of ‘Thela Hun Ginjeet’, a 1981 single by the prog rockers that Primus include semi-regularly in their sets.

The show was part of the band’s ‘Onward & Upward’ tour, which concluded with two final shows in Sacramento on Thursday and Friday (August 7 and 8). The Los Angeles date also saw guest appearances from comedian Bill Burr and Tool bassist Justin Chancellor on ‘Too Many Puppies’, Tool drummer Danny Carey on ‘My Name Is Mud’ and Ty Segall on Black Sabbath’s ‘N.I.B.’.

Watch footage of Stone’s appearance behind the drumkit here:

Stone and Primus go back a long way, with the band having created the South Park theme in 1997. They were also one of the bands to play as part of the show’s 25th anniversary concerts in 2022 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Stone also played on drums there, joining Primus and the surviving members of Rush on ‘Closer To The Heart’.

Elsewhere, Stone and co-creator Trey Parker have been locked in a war or words with Donald Trump in recent weeks after they depicted the President with a micro-penis and sharing a bed with Satan in the first episode of the new season of South Park.

The White House responded with a statement that read: ““Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.”

Parker and Stone then gave a mocking apology while asked about the statement at San Diego Comic Con.

While Trump may have disapproved of the jokes, Stephen Colbert saw the funny side. The Late Show host, whose series cancellation was celebrated by the President, played a clip from the show and called it “an important message of hope”.

New episodes of South Park stream every Friday on Paramount + in the UK, the day after the US broadcast.
