Weekend projections: Deadpool back on top as Summer comes to a close

Deadpool & Wolverine returns to the top of the chart this weekend, thanks to a decline of 39% in its fifth weekend in theaters. With Alien: Romulus dropping 61% in its second weekend, and It Ends With Us off 50% in its third outing, there was room for a new release to at least hit the top three. Average to poor results for the four new wide releases left them quite a way back in the crowd though.

Here’s how the weekend numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

Deadpool’s $18.3-million weekend will take it to $577 million to date domestically, and our model now predicts it will finish with $633 million. It now stands at $634.1 million internationally, and $1,211.3 million worldwide. Alien: Romulus, meanwhile, stands at $72.6 million domestically and $152.8 million internationally so far, and should sail past the final numbers for Alien: Covenant, which end with $74.3 million domestically and $164 million internationally.

It Ends With Us will finish out the weekend with $120.8 million in North America, and $121.8 million internationally, with the United Kingdom hitting $20.5 million so far.

Inside Out 2 passes a major milestone this weekend, becoming the first animated film to gross over $1 billion internationally.

Blink Twice is the best-performing new wide release, and its $7.3-million is respectable for a standalone thriller. If it manages a decent run in theaters, it should end up in the profit column for Amazon MGM Studios. Likewise, The Forge, with its $6.6 million opening weekend already eclipsing its reported $5-million production budget.

The Crow, meanwhile, is a major disappointment for Lionsgate, and will disappear rapidly from theaters.

Outside the top 10, but worth noting, is Strange Darling, which will debut with $1.14 million from 1,135 theaters. That’s a good result for a new distributor (Magenta Light Studios), and the film is getting excellent reviews. It’ll be worth watching how it holds on next weekend.
