Weekend projections: Deadpool enjoys strong hold, as Trap and Harold post soft openings

Deadpool & Wolverine remains comfortably at the top of the box office chart this weekend, with a very good hold projected by Disney this morning. The studio reckons the film will come in with $97 million, down just 54% from its massive opening. Trap and Harold and the Purple Crayon are meanwhile posting soft results in the face of some stiff competition.

Here’s how the weekend numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

Deadpool & Wolverine has hit an estimated $824.1 million globally after two weekends ($395.6 million domestically, and $428.5 million internationally). It has already surpassed the global cumes of both Deadpool ($786m) and Deadpool 2 ($782m). Its best international markets are China ($45.2m), the United Kingdom ($42.4m), and Mexico ($32.8m).

Inside Out 2 furthers Disney’s dominance at the global box office at the moment, with the animated titan earning another $20.5 million from 52 material international territories, to go with $6.7 million domestically. It now has $1.555 billion worldwide ($626.9m domestic, $928.2m international). Its top territories are Mexico ($101.1m), Brazil ($78.5m), and the United Kingdom ($66.4m).

Trap will open in line with other recent films directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Knock at the Cabin started out with $14.1 million, and Old with $16.9 million. Those numbers are markedly down from his pre-pandemic performance when $25 million to $40 million his typical range.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is the biggest disappointment this weekend however, with earnings of less than $2,000 per theater. That probably means it will struggle to hold on to screens, particularly given that two other family movies (Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2) are producing better sustained numbers. Critics were quite harsh on Harold, but it’s getting good audience scores (and A- from CinemaScore, for example). While it won’t last long in theaters, it could be a good performer on the home market.
