Weekend projections: Minecraft enjoys strong hold against army of new releases

A Minecraft Movie was always going to be the top earner at the box office this weekend, but it’s doing so in some style, dropping just 50% from its gargantuan opening. Warner Bros. is projecting $80.6 million for the movie as of Sunday morning, more than four times the $19 million projected for the number two film, The King of Kings.

Here are the official studio projections for the three-day weekend (click the image for a full chart of all films reporting so far):

In addition to its $281 million at the box office domestically, Minecraft will end the weekend with $269.6 million internationally, putting its global total at $550.6 million so far from 77 markets. Its biggest territories so far are the United Kingdom, with $39.8 million; China, with $20.3 million; Germany, $18.9 million; Mexico, $18.7m; Australia, $18.5m; Poland, $12.3m; Brazil, $10.9m; and France, clocking in at $10 million.

The five new releases stacked up behind Minecraft almost all came in behind the model’s prediction, possibly due to the weight of competition. Drop is the only film to show signs of picking up pace through the weekend. The King of Kings will give Angel Studios their best weekend since the phenomenal run of Sound of Freedom back in 2023, and should play well through Easter week.

Overall, we’ll have the third-best weekend of 2025 so far. Minecraft is the big reason for that, but the new releases mean that’s backed up by a broader swath of options for moviegoers.
