Weekend projections: Venom has decent second weekend as Here struggles on debut

Venom: The Last Dance is enjoying a good hold from its opening, and will easily retain top spot at the box office this weekend, according to Sony’s Sunday-morning projection. The studio’s new release, Here, is headed for a very disappointing debut, at something around $5 million.

Here’s how the weekend numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

Venom’s hold is encouraging for a film that opened well below expectations, but it only boosts our model’s prediction for its final box office slightly: from $136 million after opening weekend to $138 million now. Any improvement is good news, though, and Sony are looking to international markets to help propel the film to profitability (or at least somewhere close). Results are good on that front, particularly with $70.6 million from China so far. Mexico chips in a further $13.4 million, and the United Kingdom accounts for $11.9 million to date. In total, The Last Dance will finish the weekend with $227 million internationally, according to the studio.

The biggest winner in theaters this weekend is arguably The Wild Robot, which will jump 11% from last weekend, and now has $121.5 million domestically. It has had excellent legs in theaters despite of being available as a Premium Digital option at home. Its predicted domestic gross is now $134 million, and it will close this weekend with another $147.6 million internationally. A $300 million global total looks assured.

Here, meanwhile, will land in fifth place this weekend, and is the only film in the top nine that will miss our model’s Friday-morning prediction. The strongest performer this weekend, according to the model, is Conclave, which will be off just 20% in its second weekend, in spite of not expanding greatly from its opening. Anora will more than double its box office this weekend too. Although that doesn’t impress the model greatly, it remains the film in the top 15 with the best theater average. Also notable this weekend is A Real Pain, with $240,000 from just four theaters. Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy is set for significant expansion in the next few weeks.
