Netflix and Sony are gunning toward a 2029 release for KPop Demon Hunters 2, Deadline has confirmed.
The news comes in the wake of Netflix’s most-watched movie ever adding a near $6M to its $19M August take for a near $25M domestic gross.
The filmmakers of the sequel remain in advance talks with Sony and Netflix. No word if there’s theatrical on the next one. Why the long wait? Animated movies take some time to make.
Netflix and Sony had no comment.
With over 325 million views, KPop Demon Hunters is the most watched Netflix movie ever. It’s also the first Netflix movie to hit No. 1 at the box office back in late August with a two-day gross of $19M.
After seven nonconsecutive weeks as runner-up, the soundtrack to KPop Demon Hunters notched no. 1 on Billboard’s top 200 albums on Sept. 20. The soundtrack has gone platinum with the ditty “Golden” ranking No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Aug. 11. The IP is so big, Netflix sealed a deal with Mattel and Hasbro to be global co-master toy licensees for KPop Demon Hunters.

The Maggie Kang- and Chris Appelhans-directed movie follows Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), young-adult pop stars in a group called Huntr/x, whose ancient demon slayer lineage has them moonlighting as demon hunters when they aren’t selling out stadiums and topping charts. When their biggest demonic enemy (Lee Byung-hun) encourages the formation of an equally popular K-pop boy band aimed at stealing the souls of their fans, the trio has to fight harder than ever to hold the demons at bay while keeping their friendship intact.
