Jason Statham’s Mutiny Fails to Impress at Box Office After Leaking Early

A piracy leak hit Jason Statham’s Mutiny just days before its theatrical release. The movie still cracked the top five domestically, but its opening weekend numbers suggest real box office damage from the early upload.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny box office fails against competition

Mutiny’s box office opened to $7.5 million across North American theaters from August 21 to August 23. The film landed behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Insidious: Out of the Further, The Odyssey, and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. Those holdovers dominated screens, leaving little room for a mid-budget action thriller to break out (via Box Office Mojo).

The film cost a reported $40 million to produce. Its domestic start leaves a wide gap to close, especially since international numbers remain unavailable. Without strong overseas returns, Jason Statham’s Mutiny will struggle to reach profitability.

After all, the leak complicated matters. Days before opening, because of a technical glitch, the movie was released on Prime Video. Pirates grabbed the file and spread it across file-sharing sites. Additionally, this is the second time a Statham project has suffered such a breach. The Expendables 3 faced a similar leak years ago. That film collected under $40 million domestically but recovered with roughly $215 million worldwide. Mutiny has no such safety net yet.

Despite the weak opening, Mutiny did set one minor record. It posted the largest domestic debut for a non-sci-fi action film in 2026. The previous leader, In the Grey, opened to $2.9 million. Motor City followed with $1.7 million. A Hindi-language film, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, outperformed Mutiny with a $10 million domestic opening in March.

Mutiny follows a former soldier working private security who hunts his boss’s killers. Most of the story unfolds on a ship. Annabelle Wallis co-stars as his ally. Critics responded with mixed reviews. The film holds a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences proved more enthusiastic. It earned a B+ CinemaScore and an 86% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That fan response may fuel PVOD and streaming success later.
